Materials and Supplies

This page lists what you need and where to get it. The first table is a list of some of my favorite suppliers, the second lists the materials for the quilt itself, and the third lists other materials or equipment you'll either need or might find useful.

Outdoor Suppliers
Supplier Notes
Thru-Hiker This is probably my favorite place to order from. Paul is excellent to deal with, always has the best prices, ships immediately, and gives exact pricing when you order. His site is also the best resource for making your own stuff that I've ever seen. Tons of articles, projects, and a great forum.
Owfinc Owfinc is another excellent site and currently the only place I know of to get Polarguard. They don't use the brand name on-line, but you'll see it on the insulation page. Every time I've talked to them on the phone, they've been excellent and extremely patient and helpful. They also have a great selection of hardware. Another great thing about Owfinc is that if you order 20+ yards of anything, you get wholesale pricing on your whole order.
Seattle Fabrics Seattle has a lot of nylons that you won't find anywhere else, but is usually a little pricier. I order my 1.9 oz. camo from them and any other colors I need that no one else has.
Rocky Woods I haven't used them yet, but hear good things.
Quest Again, haven't used, but heard good things.

Other Materials
Equipment Notes
Sewing machine You don't need anything fancy. All I use are are straight and zigzag stitches.
Thread NO COTTON. None at all. Use a good quality 100% polyester thread available from one of the suppliers listed below
Insulation thread This is optional, but I used a heavy white upholstery thread to sew the darts in the insulation.
Hand quilting needle Get the thinnest long needle you can find that you can still thread yarn through.
Pins I pin just about every seam I sew. Very, very useful. Get thin pins with a visible ball head.
Clothespins Used for keeping material folded or rolled up. Very useful to keep things under control while manuevering materials around the sewing machine.
8' x 4' Masonite board or similar Slick on one side, rough on the other, about $8 from Home Depot. You'll really appreciate the slick surface when working with the insulation. I also mark all of my cuts on the board as well as the size and shape of the shockcord channels and stuff sack.
